Did Google Do An Algorithm Update on 26 March 2014?

We've been noticing a steady and consistent level of chatter in the forums and social networks from webmasters and SEOs around Google's search results fluctuations.

The search results tracking tools all report heavy activity over the past couple days, this includes Mozcast, SERPs.com, SERPMetrics and Algoroo. Here are screen captures of those charts:

Mozcast
SERPs.com
Search Metrics
Algoroo
Truth is, my internal signals from all of this makes me believe there wasn't a major algorithm update but I can be wrong.
I just think there is a lot of manual actions going out this past week or so and a lot of SEOs and webmasters disavowing a lot of links, thus shaking up the search results.
I can be wrong but that is my gut feeling.

Pigeon: Search Engine Land’s Name For The New Google Local Search Update

Last night, Google released a pretty significant local search algorithm update. Google told us there was no internal name for the update, but now that we see that it was fairly significant, we decided to give it a name: Pigeon.

Pigeon is the name we decided on because this is a local search update and pigeons tend to fly back home.
When the Google Panda update launched, there was no official name from Google, so we named it the “Farmer” update. A few days later, Google told us they internally named it the Panda update. So we switched names from Farmer to Panda to avoid that confusion.

Since this update was nameless at Google, we named it the Pigeon update so that we have a name to reference in the future.

Best Trick For Get Twitter Verified Profile

On twitter, verified account will only get the small verification badge that is highlighted below because unlike Google+, every user can have Vanity URL for there Twitter profile. :-)

Though it helps a lot in finding the official account of a brand that you want to follow. Also, verified accounts generally get higher position in twitter search results when you try to search any user using Twitter search box.

Verified Twitter Profile
Verified Twitter Profile
Twitter’s Recommendation to get verified name:
  • Embed Twitter’s official “Follow” button on your official website to get followers directly from your official website. It also helps users as well as twitter staff to know the original Twitter handler of a brand at the time of verification.
  • Include a link to your official website within your profile’s description.
Some companies also say that if you invests more than $5000/month on Twitter advertisements then it will get (and keep) your Twitter account verified.
Twitter do not consider your number of followers as a factor to put verification badge.

Steps to apply for #Verified account @Twitter:

Step 1: Read Verified Account instructions from Twitter help center here -> http://twitter.com/help/verified
Step 2: Draft a message having following details:
  • Account Number
  • Full Name
  • Location
  • Official Website
  • Bio Information (in less than 160 characters)
  • Primary Contact Number (of individual who manages the account)
  • Additional Contact Number
Send the message (direct message) to @Verified account.
Step 3: Wait for twitter to respond back. You can contact twitter directly using This Contact Form but keep in mind that twitter deals with high volume verification requests and it verifies very specific accounts.
Step 4: After getting response (by direct message from Twitter), follow the instructions given.
Final Step: In the final step you need to do these three things-
  • Learn how to Tweet effectively - You’ll be asked to choose best tweet out of two tweets. There will be no negative impact if you don’t answer correctly.
  • Connect with other Interesting Twitter Users - Connect with other verified accounts. It helps in making your account  more legitimate.
  •  Protect your Account - You’ll be asked to add  a phone number through which Twitter can contact you if they find any problem with your account.
Recommendation: Do not change your account’s information after getting Verification badge. It can cause Twitter to remove the verification badge and make you to contact them again.

Search Results Increase Up to 3 in New Google Maps

The new Google Maps for desktop updated the local search card and now shows the top 3 results instead of only one. You can still go to the list of top results or check the results from the map, but the card is more convenient. Google is the king of search, so people expect to find a hierarchy. The list of top results is one click away, but many people will never find it.
