Duplicate URLs In The Disavow Is Not An Issue Said by Google

An SEO asked on Twitter if listing the same URL in the disavow link file will hurt or what happens? Does listing it twice negate it? Does listing it twice show more importance? Or does Google ignore duplicate listings?

Google's John Mueller responded on Twitter saying "duplicates don't cause problems."

John did add that it might make it hard for you to maintain the file. If you ever removed the URL, you might not notice the URL is still listed further down the list. But other than that, there are no issues listing the same URL twice in your disavow file.

In addition, if a link is actually removed, keeping the link in your disavow file doesn't matter either.

Google Penguin 3.0 Vibrations Getting Chilly...

I know, the boy who cried wolf, but my job here is to bring to you what the SEO community is buzzing about and they are buzzing about a possible Google Penguin update, or at least Google testing things that may imply Google is pushing out a Penguin update.

Didn't I expect Penguin to be launched a week or two ago? Yes and I was wrong but I honestly believe Google was testing something related to Penguin and then decided to pull it back.

And now? I think Google is testing Penguin related algorithm changes and may or may not launch it any day.
I am seeing a lot of chatter, not just in Google Webmaster Help and WebmasterWorld but throughout Twitter and other forums.

Plus we have the automated tools starting to light up again.

Best Trick For Get Twitter Verified Profile

On twitter, verified account will only get the small verification badge that is highlighted below because unlike Google+, every user can have Vanity URL for there Twitter profile. :-)

Though it helps a lot in finding the official account of a brand that you want to follow. Also, verified accounts generally get higher position in twitter search results when you try to search any user using Twitter search box.

Verified Twitter Profile
Verified Twitter Profile
Twitter’s Recommendation to get verified name:
  • Embed Twitter’s official “Follow” button on your official website to get followers directly from your official website. It also helps users as well as twitter staff to know the original Twitter handler of a brand at the time of verification.
  • Include a link to your official website within your profile’s description.
Some companies also say that if you invests more than $5000/month on Twitter advertisements then it will get (and keep) your Twitter account verified.
Twitter do not consider your number of followers as a factor to put verification badge.

Steps to apply for #Verified account @Twitter:

Step 1: Read Verified Account instructions from Twitter help center here -> http://twitter.com/help/verified
Step 2: Draft a message having following details:
  • Account Number
  • Full Name
  • Location
  • Official Website
  • Bio Information (in less than 160 characters)
  • Primary Contact Number (of individual who manages the account)
  • Additional Contact Number
Send the message (direct message) to @Verified account.
Step 3: Wait for twitter to respond back. You can contact twitter directly using This Contact Form but keep in mind that twitter deals with high volume verification requests and it verifies very specific accounts.
Step 4: After getting response (by direct message from Twitter), follow the instructions given.
Final Step: In the final step you need to do these three things-
  • Learn how to Tweet effectively - You’ll be asked to choose best tweet out of two tweets. There will be no negative impact if you don’t answer correctly.
  • Connect with other Interesting Twitter Users - Connect with other verified accounts. It helps in making your account  more legitimate.
  •  Protect your Account - You’ll be asked to add  a phone number through which Twitter can contact you if they find any problem with your account.
Recommendation: Do not change your account’s information after getting Verification badge. It can cause Twitter to remove the verification badge and make you to contact them again.

Best Trick For Get Google Plus Vanity Short URL As Your User Name

The trend of Verified accounts are not so new in social media sites. Twitter is using this feature for many years. Google+ is using this feature from the beginning. Yeah, Facebook and YouTube has introduced this feature recently.

Verified Names are having verification badges/checkmarks along with there names in these Social Networking websites that helps people to find out and identify Official channel, profile, page about a business or a popular celebrity.

Verification BadgesIt is becoming very important for celebrities or brands to get these Verification badges on there profile because along with providing authenticity, it is also a symbol of pride. It shows, the person/brand is very influential and having very high popularity in that social network too.

So, if you are a company, an organization, a leader or celebrity and did not manage to get the Verification Badges yet  to your profiles, channels or fanpages then we are telling you how you can get one for you. :-)

For Google+ Profiles

Google+, along with providing Verification Badges, also provides Vanity URLs to the verified names to make the profile’s URL user-friendly and easy to remember. See the image below:
Verified Name Google+
Verified Google+ Profile
If you are in large number of Google+ circles (for e.g., greater than 20K ) and your profile name appears the same in the other social network websites then getting Google+ Verified name is not tough for you.
Unfortunately, there is not any way to contact Google+ for this. Google+ Staff will manually contact you and guide you to get verified name for your profile. However, these few tips will help you to get noticed by Google+ team:
  1. You are required to become popular in your field.
  2. Don’t share something illegal.
  3. Don’t opt Spam ways to increase your ‘in Circles’.
  4. Remain active at Google+, do status updates, get engaged in users comments.

For Google+ Business Pages

Google+ Business Pages should have great popularity and influence in Google+ to get verified badges along with their Names. Your Page will also get Vanity URL after getting verified badge.

Google+ Verified Page For Mashable
There are still few important things that you should do for your Google+ Business Page to get it verified, without any problem:
  1. Google+ Page should be connected to Official website by a proper two-way link between your website and page. This verification is also known as “Verifying Publishership”. Learn how to link Google+ Page with website.
  2. Make Sure your Google+ Page is having the “Name” by which it (your brand) is known by people. You can have small modifications in your Google+ Page, Website name but it should be at least identifiable that you are the same brand.
  3. Build popularity and followers of your Google+ Page and post there regularly. You need to have at least 1000 followers for your brand’s official Google+ Page (as said by Google).
  4. When you get meaningful number of followers and good engagement, apply for a verified name for your Google+ Brand Page using Google+ Page Verification Request form. If you face rejection, increase your Google+ Business Page’s popularity and apply again.

Google: Refreshing Penguin Is Not So Simple

It seems like Google Penguin has been on some sort of vacation, since it has now been over 10 months since the last refresh.

The sad part is, those who have spent the past 10 months trying to "fix" their sites, are in a penalty box just waiting. They are suffering, many businesses cannot sustain paying payroll with such a hit, and small mom and pop shop are closing up shop.

So why can't Google refresh the algorithm to let those who paid their dues and made the fixes necessary come back in Google's good graces?

Josh Bachynski, the one who questioned Matt Cutts on ethics asked Google's John Mueller that question 40 minutes and 44 seconds into the Google Webmaster Hangout on Google+ this past Monday.

John responded that Penguin can't be a simple refresh, it needs a "complete data refresh" and that it is not just a basic "tweak." It needs a "complete rerun" of the algorithm and that is something they do not simply do "randomly." John added that this specific algorithm is taking longer because they want to "make sure it is the right type of data" and they do it right. To do it right, they need to test it and tweak it and then run the update with new data completely.

Google is working on it but 10 months later, is a long long time for many webmasters.

Use Hreflang Tags for Language and Regional URLs

Many websites serve users from around the world with content translated or targeted to users in a certain region. Google uses the rel="alternate" hreflang="x" attributes to serve the correct language or regional URL in Search results.

Some example scenarios where rel="alternate" hreflang="x" is recommended:
  • You keep the main content in a single language and translate only the template, such as the navigation and footer. Pages that feature user-generated content like a forums typically do this.
  • Your content has small regional variations with similar content in a single language. For example, you might have English-language content targeted to the US, GB, and Ireland.
  • Your site content is fully translated. For example, you have both German and English versions of each page.

Using language annotations

Imagine you have an English language page hosted at http://www.example.com/, with a Spanish alternative at http://es.example.com/. You can indicate to Google that the Spanish URL is the Spanish-language equivalent of the English page in one of three ways:
  • HTML link element in header. In the HTML section of http://www.example.com/, add a link element pointing to the Spanish version of that webpage at http://es.example.com/, like this:

  • HTTP header. If you publish non-HTML files (like PDFs), you can use an HTTP header to indicate a different language version of a URL:
    Link: ; rel="alternate"; hreflang="es"

  • Sitemap. Instead of using markup, you can submit language version information in a Sitemap.
You can specify multi-language URLs in the same domain as a given URL, or use URLs from a different domain

Google Search Tool To Filter Private Content

Kenichi Suzuki, one of my favorite SEOs from Japan, posted a screen shot on Google+ of a search tool filter to filter results by private content shared with me.

Here is his screen shot:

Google Search Tool To Filter Private Content
I personally do not see this feature because I am a Google Apps user, but most Gmail users should be able to see it by conducting a search and selecting "search tools" and clicking on the "private" option in filters.
This type of filter will show you content that was shared with you on Google+ or Gmail if you are signed in to your Google Account.

It is similar to what they launched in 2013 where you typed "my photos" and so forth but this is now an explicit search filter.

I don't think this is new, but I never see it myself since it is not enabled for Google Apps users by default.

Pigeon: Search Engine Land’s Name For The New Google Local Search Update

Last night, Google released a pretty significant local search algorithm update. Google told us there was no internal name for the update, but now that we see that it was fairly significant, we decided to give it a name: Pigeon.

Pigeon is the name we decided on because this is a local search update and pigeons tend to fly back home.
When the Google Panda update launched, there was no official name from Google, so we named it the “Farmer” update. A few days later, Google told us they internally named it the Panda update. So we switched names from Farmer to Panda to avoid that confusion.

Since this update was nameless at Google, we named it the Pigeon update so that we have a name to reference in the future.

Google Structured Data Testing Tool Does not Show Authorship Image

Google dropped the authorship image from the search results for good. How the Google Structured Data Testing Tool still showed the old format, with the author image.

That has now been addressed and the authorship layout in the search results now match what you see in the Structured Data Testing Tool.

SEOs: Negative SEO On Google Much Easier Now

As you all know, negative SEO is not new, in fact, Google has said it is rare but possible since 2007. Sites as large as Expedia may have suffered from it and Google had to reword their documentation on the topic.

But now that we have SEOs threatening clients with negative SEO, it is more of a concern out there.

WebmasterWorld administrator, Engine, said on Webmaster World that recently, "negative SEO is now much easier to do now than it was prior to google's latest updates."

The scary part, most SEOs agree with him. Another SEO said "Yes, absolutely." And others agreed as well, "It is absolutely easier now for negative seo campaigns."

Of course, this is a huge concern for anyone with an online business. Google may shrug it under the carpet, but this is a concern that Google needs to address.

Do you think negative SEO is easier or harder? Take our poll:

Now You Can Connect Your Google+ Page With Your Google Maps Listing

You can finally connect your Google+ company page to your Google Maps listing.

For the past year or so, I had two listings for my company in Google+. Then, somehow, I had a third. Now, I was able to connect my Google Maps verified listing to my Google+ company page. And the biggest surprise to me, it worked! Google Maps is known for bugs and this seemed to actually work.

My company's Google+ page, over here now also has a "verified local business" check box, because I went through the steps to do so.

The steps are described here:

(1) Assuming you have a verified maps listing and Google+ page, then Log in to Google+, select Pages from the left-hand navigation ribbon, and click Manage this page on the local page.

(2) The local page will look almost the same as your current page. It will include a verification shield next to the name of a page. If you hover the badge, you’ll see "Verified local business".

Connect Google+ Page
(3) From the top left corner, choose Dashboard > Settings

(4) Scroll to the "Profile" section. Next to “This page is connected to Google Maps”, click Connect a different page.

(5) In the "Link a different page to this location" dialog, pick the page that you’d like to connect to Maps and click Next.

(6) You’ll see a list describing the changes to the newly-created page you’re connecting to Maps, and the local Google+ page you’re disconnecting from Maps. Click Confirm.

That is it and it worked.
click for full size
The page that’s newly connected to Maps will:
  • Display the name and verification badge from the former local page.
  • Display the business information (hours, phone number, etc.) and reviews from the former local page.
  • No longer display prior owner responses to local reviews. Your existing reviews may take a few hours to show up after connecting the page.
  • Carry over followers, posts, and managers.
  • Carry over the custom URL (if you’ve set one up).
  • Possibly remove ad campaigns associated with the page. To start a new campaign, visit http://www.adwords.google.com/express and follow the step-by-step instructions.
The former local page will:
  • No longer display on Google Maps
  • No longer display local business information or reviews
  • Be renamed to "Backup of "
  • Still be visible on Google+
  • Retain followers, posts, and managers from the former local page
  • Retain the custom URL from the former local page (if you’ve set one up)
  • No longer display AdWords Express campaigns associated with the page.

Google Webmaster Tools Adds Block Resources Debug With Fetch & Render

As expected, Google has introduced a new tool to help webmaster determine what JavaScript, CSS, and other resources they are blocking from GoogleBot's crawl.
Google announced it yesterday, as a new feature in the Fetch as Google tool in Webmaster Tools, which now has Fetch & Render:
Google Fetch & Render
Clicking on it will give webmasters the option to specify how Google should fetch it, i.e. desktop, smartphone or feature phones. Then it will show you a visual representation of what Google renders and more importantly, at the bottom, it will show you which resources you are blocking GoogleBot from crawling.

The RustyBrick desktop version of our site rendered:

click for full size
The RustyBrick mobile version of our site rendered:

click for full size
Notice what is being blocked, all Google resources. :)
Now, the old version is still available under the other "fetch" tab and that is very useful as well.

Google Panda 4.0 Now Rolling Out; A New Panda Algorithm

On May 21, 2014, was pretty wild, with Google confirming an update over the weekend targeting spammy queries and also Google's Matt Cutts posting on Twitter that Panda 4.0 was released.

This is a new Panda algorithm, not a refresh that we've seen almost monthly but enough for Google to name this 4.0, which means a new algorithm update to it.

Google's Matt Cutts told us at Search Engine Land that this Panda 4.0 update impacts ~7.5% of English queries to a degree that a regular user might notice.

Also when I spoke to Matt Cutts, he made it sound like this update may appear gentler for some sites but it does lay the groundwork to future changes in the direction of a softer and gentler Panda algorithm.

Indoor Maps & Mall Directories Come To Google Now For Android

As we reported last week, similar to the offline Google Now cards, Google has made indoor maps within the Android Search App’s Google Now cards live.

Google Indoor Maps was introduced in 2011 for select malls and shopping centers.

Now, if you are using the latest Google Search App on Android, a Google Now card may appear and show you a searchable card that lets you find the stores in the mall. It may also help you walk directly to the store using Google’s indoor maps feature. Google said, “with one tap, you’ll be taken to the indoor map in Google Maps with a pin showing you exactly where the store is.”

Google posted the news on Google+ on Saturday saying:
Finding the directory in a five-story mall is hard enough, let alone the actual store you’re looking for. Now in some malls, Google Now will show you a searchable directory so you can quickly find a specific store or type of store, like clothing or sporting goods. With one tap, you’ll be taken to the indoor map in Google Maps with a pin showing you exactly where the store is. Try it out now in the U.S. and Japan by updating your #GoogleSearch app for Android: http://goo.gl/idgt3y—we’ll add more malls so stay tuned if you don’t see your favorite just yet. Unfortunately, we can’t help you decide what color sweater to buy for your mother. :)

Google Provides More Clarity Around Sneaky Redirects Against Their Guidelines

Google announced on their Webmaster blog that they have updated two of their guideline documents to improve the clarify around what are sneaky redirects that are against their webmaster guidelines.

Google has expanded their guidelines to ensure webmasters are aware that using sneaky redirects through mobile site detection and redirection, is not allowed if the content is not the same. Google’s revised guideline reads “desktop users receive a normal page, while mobile users are redirected to a completely different spam domain” is not in accordance with Google’s guidelines.

Here are the two new examples Google placed in their sneaky redirects guideline page:
  • Search engines shown one type of content while users are redirected to something significantly different.
  • Desktop users receive a normal page, while mobile users are redirected to a completely different spam domain.
