What’s New feature in Google My Business?

  1. There is a new navigation panel that helps users get less confused when navigating around in the dashboard.

  2. The area to add managers is in a much more visible place in a new vertical column on the left.

Google My Business Locations (GMBL) – What’s New & Improved?

  1. You can now see G+ Brand Pages that are not connected to Maps easily right in the main dashboard. Before, you had to go to Google Plus to see these.

  2. You can choose whether to view the listings in list view (better for lots of locations) or card view (shows more detail)

    List View

    Card View
  3. An organized “to do” list that tells you what locations still need to be verified, which ones have data conflicts, or are missing store codes.

If you haven’t seen the new changes show up in your accounts yet, they should be rolling out in the next few days!

Duplicate URLs In The Disavow Is Not An Issue Said by Google

An SEO asked on Twitter if listing the same URL in the disavow link file will hurt or what happens? Does listing it twice negate it? Does listing it twice show more importance? Or does Google ignore duplicate listings?

Google's John Mueller responded on Twitter saying "duplicates don't cause problems."

John did add that it might make it hard for you to maintain the file. If you ever removed the URL, you might not notice the URL is still listed further down the list. But other than that, there are no issues listing the same URL twice in your disavow file.

In addition, if a link is actually removed, keeping the link in your disavow file doesn't matter either.

Best Trick For Get Google Plus Vanity Short URL As Your User Name

The trend of Verified accounts are not so new in social media sites. Twitter is using this feature for many years. Google+ is using this feature from the beginning. Yeah, Facebook and YouTube has introduced this feature recently.

Verified Names are having verification badges/checkmarks along with there names in these Social Networking websites that helps people to find out and identify Official channel, profile, page about a business or a popular celebrity.

Verification BadgesIt is becoming very important for celebrities or brands to get these Verification badges on there profile because along with providing authenticity, it is also a symbol of pride. It shows, the person/brand is very influential and having very high popularity in that social network too.

So, if you are a company, an organization, a leader or celebrity and did not manage to get the Verification Badges yet  to your profiles, channels or fanpages then we are telling you how you can get one for you. :-)

For Google+ Profiles

Google+, along with providing Verification Badges, also provides Vanity URLs to the verified names to make the profile’s URL user-friendly and easy to remember. See the image below:
Verified Name Google+
Verified Google+ Profile
If you are in large number of Google+ circles (for e.g., greater than 20K ) and your profile name appears the same in the other social network websites then getting Google+ Verified name is not tough for you.
Unfortunately, there is not any way to contact Google+ for this. Google+ Staff will manually contact you and guide you to get verified name for your profile. However, these few tips will help you to get noticed by Google+ team:
  1. You are required to become popular in your field.
  2. Don’t share something illegal.
  3. Don’t opt Spam ways to increase your ‘in Circles’.
  4. Remain active at Google+, do status updates, get engaged in users comments.

For Google+ Business Pages

Google+ Business Pages should have great popularity and influence in Google+ to get verified badges along with their Names. Your Page will also get Vanity URL after getting verified badge.

There are still few important things that you should do for your Google+ Business Page to get it verified, without any problem:
  1. Google+ Page should be connected to Official website by a proper two-way link between your website and page. This verification is also known as “Verifying Publishership”. Learn how to link Google+ Page with website.
  2. Make Sure your Google+ Page is having the “Name” by which it (your brand) is known by people. You can have small modifications in your Google+ Page, Website name but it should be at least identifiable that you are the same brand.
  3. Build popularity and followers of your Google+ Page and post there regularly. You need to have at least 1000 followers for your brand’s official Google+ Page (as said by Google).
  4. When you get meaningful number of followers and good engagement, apply for a verified name for your Google+ Brand Page using Google+ Page Verification Request form. If you face rejection, increase your Google+ Business Page’s popularity and apply again.

Now You Can Connect Your Google+ Page With Your Google Maps Listing

You can finally connect your Google+ company page to your Google Maps listing.

For the past year or so, I had two listings for my company in Google+. Then, somehow, I had a third. Now, I was able to connect my Google Maps verified listing to my Google+ company page. And the biggest surprise to me, it worked! Google Maps is known for bugs and this seemed to actually work.

My company's Google+ page, over here now also has a "verified local business" check box, because I went through the steps to do so.

The steps are described here:

(1) Assuming you have a verified maps listing and Google+ page, then Log in to Google+, select Pages from the left-hand navigation ribbon, and click Manage this page on the local page.

(2) The local page will look almost the same as your current page. It will include a verification shield next to the name of a page. If you hover the badge, you’ll see "Verified local business".

Connect Google+ Page
(3) From the top left corner, choose Dashboard > Settings

(4) Scroll to the "Profile" section. Next to “This page is connected to Google Maps”, click Connect a different page.

(5) In the "Link a different page to this location" dialog, pick the page that you’d like to connect to Maps and click Next.

(6) You’ll see a list describing the changes to the newly-created page you’re connecting to Maps, and the local Google+ page you’re disconnecting from Maps. Click Confirm.

That is it and it worked.
click for full size
The page that’s newly connected to Maps will:
  • Display the name and verification badge from the former local page.
  • Display the business information (hours, phone number, etc.) and reviews from the former local page.
  • No longer display prior owner responses to local reviews. Your existing reviews may take a few hours to show up after connecting the page.
  • Carry over followers, posts, and managers.
  • Carry over the custom URL (if you’ve set one up).
  • Possibly remove ad campaigns associated with the page. To start a new campaign, visit http://www.adwords.google.com/express and follow the step-by-step instructions.
The former local page will:
  • No longer display on Google Maps
  • No longer display local business information or reviews
  • Be renamed to "Backup of "
  • Still be visible on Google+
  • Retain followers, posts, and managers from the former local page
  • Retain the custom URL from the former local page (if you’ve set one up)
  • No longer display AdWords Express campaigns associated with the page.

Google Webmaster Tools Adds Block Resources Debug With Fetch & Render

As expected, Google has introduced a new tool to help webmaster determine what JavaScript, CSS, and other resources they are blocking from GoogleBot's crawl.
Google announced it yesterday, as a new feature in the Fetch as Google tool in Webmaster Tools, which now has Fetch & Render:
Google Fetch & Render
Clicking on it will give webmasters the option to specify how Google should fetch it, i.e. desktop, smartphone or feature phones. Then it will show you a visual representation of what Google renders and more importantly, at the bottom, it will show you which resources you are blocking GoogleBot from crawling.

The RustyBrick desktop version of our site rendered:

The RustyBrick mobile version of our site rendered:

Notice what is being blocked, all Google resources. :)
Now, the old version is still available under the other "fetch" tab and that is very useful as well.

Google Panda 4.0 Now Rolling Out; A New Panda Algorithm

On May 21, 2014, was pretty wild, with Google confirming an update over the weekend targeting spammy queries and also Google's Matt Cutts posting on Twitter that Panda 4.0 was released.

This is a new Panda algorithm, not a refresh that we've seen almost monthly but enough for Google to name this 4.0, which means a new algorithm update to it.

Google's Matt Cutts told us at Search Engine Land that this Panda 4.0 update impacts ~7.5% of English queries to a degree that a regular user might notice.

Also when I spoke to Matt Cutts, he made it sound like this update may appear gentler for some sites but it does lay the groundwork to future changes in the direction of a softer and gentler Panda algorithm.

Tips - Google's Matt Cutts On How To Buy Domain Names

Google's Matt Cutts posted a video on the question How can I research a domain that I may want to purchase?

Matt Cutts gave a few tips on what to do, what steps to take, when researching a domain name buy.

(1) Do a site command and if no content is found, that can be a bad thing. Of course, if the domain name was never registered or is new or is parked, then it is likely no content will be found. But if it is buying
someone else's domain name, then no content found is a red flag.

(2) Search for the domain name without the .com and see what people wrote about it. See if there are bad stories on it. See if someone went around and did a lot of spamming.

http://bit.ly/1fpgmYy Use archive.org to see the site before you owned it. Did it look spammy?

(4) Ask to see Google Webmaster Tools and look for messages and stats there.

(5) Ask to see Google Analytics or other analytics they may use.

Google Penalizes PostJoint Over Guest Blog Links

It seems Google has gone after yet another guest blog network that is being used by SEOs for link building purposes. The link network is named PostJoint and has gone on record that they are different from MyBlogGuest, which was penalized a month ago.

Matt Cutts confirmed on Twitter in a round about way that PostJoint and likely all the publishers in the network, were penalized. I bet they will start seeing unnatural link notifications within Google Webmaster Tools Manual Actions Viewer this coming week.

70% Said Google's Penguin 2.1 Update Hurt them

About six-months ago, Google unleashed a major update to Penguin, the Penguin 2.1 update.
The earlier feedback from that update was that is was a big impact to webmasters and mostly SEOs who used links in an aggressive manner.

So I posted a poll asking you how you did with the update. Being that six-months later there has been no reports of a new Penguin refresh or update, I figured I post the poll results today.

We had over 2,800 responses to the poll, and 70% said they saw a drop in Google referrer traffic after the update. So 70% seemed to have been negatively impacted by it. While only 7%, or just about 200 people, reported their sites recovered from a previous Penguin update with Penguin 2.1. 6% said they saw an increase in traffic, where one site goes down, another benefits. And 17% said they saw no change at all before or after.

Here is the pie chart:

google penguin 2.1 poll
Again, we are still waiting for a Penguin refresh for over six-months. I think we are due one soon.

65% Prefer Google Manual Actions Over Algorithmic Demotions

A while back, we polled our audience asking if they prefer manual or algorithmic penalties by Google - that is, if you had to pick one or the other.

Imagine Matt Cutts coming over to you and saying, you're a bad boy. You deserve a penalty but I'll let you pick, you can have an algorithmic demotion or a manual action. Which would you pick?

I explain in detail the different between the two over here and the response was that 65% prefer a manual action, whereas 35% said they prefer an algorithmic demotion.

We had over 300 responses to the thread. Disclaimer: Please see my poll disclaimer post before coming to any conclusions on these results.

Google Panda Refresh Or Softer Panda Update?

Let me start off by saying that I normally would wait another 24 hours before posting this because the chatter is so new, but I will be offline tomorrow and the day after and I am going with what I see now.google panda
It seems, based on the very very early chatter that a Panda refresh started late last night or this morning. Some are asking if it is that version two of the softer Panda update that Google's Matt Cutts promised.
The ongoing WebmasterWorld thread has posts from late yesterday and early this morning with questions about changes at Google that seem to relate to sites impacted by the Panda algorithm.

So the questions we have now:
(1) Is Google pushing out an update?
(2) If so, was it just a typical monthly Panda refresh?
(3) Or was it the softer Panda update that seems harder for many?

Local Businesses Losing Reviews After Yelp-Yahoo Deal

The recent Yelp/Yahoo partnership has angered some local business owners who say years of positive reviews are now gone from their Yahoo Local business listings.

Some of their stories were told this week in the Wall Street Journal, including Colonial Hardwood Flooring of Lexington, Mass. The company says it had built up “six years of mostly positive feedback” on its Yahoo Local listing, but now it only shows one Yelp review that was posted on February 14, 2014.

colonial-hardwood

As the WSJ explains, Yahoo will continue to show its own reviews on a Yahoo Local listing until a business gets a new Yelp review. When that happens, the Yelp reviews replace Yahoo reviews. So the fact that this one Yelp review is so new is what caused the Yahoo reviews to disappear from Colonial Hardwood’s listing.

Google Says Our Algorithms Picked Up On Your Keyword Stuffed Page

Keyword stuffing is as cute as a teddy bear that is losing their stuffing - don't do it.
A Google Webmaster Help thread has one site owner complaining his site suddenly dropped in the rankings.
Why? Well, Google's John Mueller said it doesn't help that your site's home page has over 300 mentions of the term "batteries" throughout the page, especially in the footer. I viewed the source code of just the home page and there are over 600 mentions of the word "batteries," not counting the alternatives of the word.

Google Changed his Privacy - Google Updates Its Privacy Policy

You may have noticed Google’s Privacy Policy has been updated as of March 31, with a red letter “Updated” call-out the site’s home page preceding Google’s Privacy & Terms link.

This is the first time the company has updated the policy this year, following an update in December of 2013. There were only two updates last year, one occurring on June 24 and the other on December 20.
Google posted a “Comparison” page to outline the most recent Privacy Policy updates, along with an archive of updates dating back to June 9, 1999.

“As you use our services, we want you to be clear how we’re using information and the ways in which you can protect your privacy,” claimed Google on the page listing its new Privacy Policy.

Google’s April Fools Video: No We Won’t Stop Changing; While Shirt Constantly Changes

If you didn’t have enough April Fools day fun today, here is one more for you.

In today’s video from Matt Cutts, Matt answered a real question from Dave in the UK, who asked, “When will Google stop updating its search results?” The answer was never! And to prove his point, Matt animated his shirt to change different colors and then overlay flowers on top of the shirt.

I made an animated GIF image to show the various colors and tricks with the shirt but the video is below. In short, Google won’t stop changing, like Matt’s shirt that day.

It's Time To Get Creative With Your Link Removal Requests

Why is it harder? Well, asking for a link is a positive thing. People like positive things. You tell them they have a great site, you are wonderful, etc etc. But link removal requests are negative and people do not like negative things. You are asking a webmaster to remove a link you have to them because Google thinks it is low quality. How dare you tell a webmaster their site is low quality!

Shai Barel of Brilliance said it worked well and even shared three email responses from webmasters who complied with the link removal request.

Did Google Do An Algorithm Update on 26 March 2014?

We've been noticing a steady and consistent level of chatter in the forums and social networks from webmasters and SEOs around Google's search results fluctuations.

The search results tracking tools all report heavy activity over the past couple days, this includes Mozcast, SERPs.com, SERPMetrics and Algoroo. Here are screen captures of those charts:

Mozcast
SERPs.com
Search Metrics
Algoroo
Truth is, my internal signals from all of this makes me believe there wasn't a major algorithm update but I can be wrong.
I just think there is a lot of manual actions going out this past week or so and a lot of SEOs and webmasters disavowing a lot of links, thus shaking up the search results.
I can be wrong but that is my gut feeling.
